Coming into land!!

On my final morning I insisted on a flying visit to the office so that I could present staff with the hand painted shirts with the pictures of the children with their work. The project is to be known as "Impressions MD 2011" as hand painted on the shirts.
I had painstakingly transferred the pictures and hand painted the logo on twelve shirts working a couple of nights late into the night, so that staff also can make presentations at the Orphanages on behalf of the project!
Above the final photo shot with staff I had come to know over the last at the office of Help the Children Charity.

Minutes later I whisked off in a car heading for the border. Tranestria is one very interesting state or maybe it should be referred to as a non state?
As a result of a civil war in 1993 the Russian Red army peace keepers have a presence at the border.

On the whole the border equates to the historical border that was the demarcation prior to 1940 when the Soviet Union created the Republic of Moldova. This boundary followed the line of the River Nistru. The only difference to this is that in 1993 the Transtrians have also taken the town of Bendary which is on the Western bank (Moldovan side) of the River Nistru!

Any border crossing into Transniestria involves going through three sets of border control. Above can be seen the Transniestrian with their red and green flag, this is followed by the Russian Peace keepers, and is then followed by the Moldovan Border Control.

My hosts seemed quite accustomed to dealing with these controls, everything in Traniestria is done on a bartering basis - corruption is the name of the game - which I sense is the name of the game in former Soviet regions as a whole! (Moldova is not prone to this way of life to the same extent as it it is looking west towards allegiance with the European Union).
However our driver did handover a small bottle of perfume to the Customs official at the Moldovan check point - had this not been done my exit may not have been so prompt.

We then were being whisked through the Moldovan countryside with its undulating countryside dotted with small villages with as many wells and it was with sadness that I saw the grand entry of Botannica in the distance, but realised I had on this occasion be dropped at the International Airport for my departure.

There was one further problem as we sped up the hill towards the airport our car was stopped by the Moldovan cops!
Yes we were speeding also it had to be checked that the driver had both citizenship for both Moldova and Transniestria - thankfully I was not driving!
The Police were looking for 100dollar bribe my hosts were looking to get it down to 10 dollars which I believe they did!
I was very thankful to be in the safe hands of my hosts

It was with mixed emotions that I left my new Tranestrian friends, but my own sense and knowledge that my project objectives had largely been met and also had been received so well at the orphanages left me with a sense that I could leave well pleased with my endeavours!

I had a long wait at the airport but a coffee at the bar close to the entrance allowed me to have a view out towards the land of Moldova I have come to love and feel apart of. And I had the fore cite to keep some paints handy and went about my business of creating my final impression from the terminal building looking towards the white apartment buildings that make up the suburbs of Chisinau and the red and white chimneys of industry that give way to the undulating countryside dotted with homesteads that had become a familiar sight over the passed weeks.
With in the foreground the entry access to the terminal building and the police officer who both seemed to have responsibility for keeping vehicles moving and also called in a special unit when a piece of left luggage was found inside the terminal not too distant to where I was standing!
What a contrast this terminal is to the huge unfriendly concrete giant of Gatwick where I had to waste away some hours three weeks previously!

My flight back was with an Austrian airline and a change of plane in Vienna!
I was able to share the first flight with a Moldovan girl who had just completed her masters in finance in Berlin and was about to start a job in the sector in Berlin. She had just spent sometime at home with her parents and been a bridesmaid to one of her friends. She was a very proud Romanian Moldovan and it was really nice to get a final perspective from her having had very much a Russian perspective on things over the last week.

I like both Russians and Romanian Moldavians - thankfully both groups seem at least on the surface to co-exist quite happily.

It was with Quite some sadness that as this small plane shakily came into land I had to make a swift departure saying fair well to Elena having exchanged contact details and make my way to my London bound plane.

The final planes departure was delayed by 15 minutes due to heavy winds over London which meant the queuing of planes over London had to be kept to a minimum - apparently Britain had experienced severe winds as a tail end of Hurricane Karina had reached the maritime shores of Uk.

However as we flew in over the Wash, I am sure pilots follow the rivers like travellers of old. The Captain reported that the winds subsided and the cloud had been largely blown away.
So above is a view of the Thames with the old Millennium Dome (now the O2 building) in the bottom centre of the photo.

As we finally came into land with the sun setting I realised one chapter of this adventure was coming to a successful completion.

..... But as I saw a plane take off another chapter was just beginning ... how am I going to bring value to all this .... and make the lives of these orphans known back in the UK!

That question can wait for another day .... first I need a few good nights sleep and to enjoy the fact that my pioneering adventure had birthed "Impressions MD 2011" and has been a success!

plein air Nistru stlyle

c capturing a cattle
+ goat herder by the Nistru river - i thought at one point the goat was going butt my paints out the way as he vigorous chew grass!

but I survived to complete the impression!

wedding blues

Was take out to another village yesterday afternoon luckily i recovered with modium tablets from sickness brought on haviing been a guest where in fact i acted a best man at a rural wedding = bazaar expereince!!
this 12 year sums up for me what this region is the closeness of the land to the urban dwellers!

I believe I back in the eastern bloc - because although my plane is not to 3/50 and Chisnau is only an hours drive away! - we got a leave just after nine because we could have along wait at the border - especially with it being Monday - so it is going to be a painfully long trip back!

I trust the crossing into Wales will be easier although I know alot of you wElsh would have it otherwise!

t shirt update

Having got up 4am to work on tshirts for an hour pleased to say pics have transfered pretty well!!

Tonight need to paint on logo message!

Believe today I am scheduled to go to disability orphanage - and do painting.

Help the Children have had to get permission from a government department to allow me to do workk with orphanages. We then further have to be invited by the dirctor of the Orphanage,

Then they have to have staff and a car to take me so thereis no doubt this charity is pulling out all the stops for my visit.

I am therefore doing all I can to do my bite but to hand paint 9 tshirts is going to take sometime!

Wednesday more sessions!!

today was the turn of Fostered children who are being supported by this charity
About 30 turned up all quite young
I ebcouraged them to try mixing and using different media,
it was great to watch they went for it!!

Later on I took a walk along the river and had an evening to myself - got Borsche and piva

hopefully bringing the project into land i have worked very late helped with some Vodka

as i hope this mass production of t shirts will both act as finally to my work here, but also act
as away to commence the valuing of the childrens woek!

i willl see how successful my endeavours have been in the morning - this is what you have been waiting for Mr OThomas!

i need to stop now

Tuesday, 6 September 2011

I have included these two pictures just to try and show the depth of what this porject has meant to these young people. The girl above yesterday not only did her picture but she also had
or seized the opportunity to share her poetic gifting writing to England!

Equally the previous day see the smile on this boys face as he has photo taken !

All the red tape and the way everything is operating the whole system is only allowing us contact of a maximium of just over an hour!

But I am satisfied this is a pioneering exercise but we are getting to the point where it counts ,,,, touching these young peoples lives and showing these people a meaningful message of love!!
I am struggling to keep up! Operating everything in Russian complicates things! as you can see
.......but I am pleased to say that in the words of my friend Chris Cartwright I am beginning to see away of bringing this project into land here - I just hope all the Russian prompts and signs do not beat me !

Chobruchi Orphanage

Help the Children here in Trienestria work with five orphanages of those five only one is Romenian speaking. Yesterday the orphanage had been in a village not far from the city today w e drove some 20miles i would say east through quite flat country and vvillages with large concrete structures to announce your arrival in the village.

We had actually been invited by the orphanage who said they had a number of young people interested in art. We were not to br dissappointed.

On arriving one sensed a well organised place and we were taken into the directors office and some papers were passed over before she made us welocme.

We were taken to a classroom where we were greeted by quite a number of faces who all seemed eager - they were soon joined by others!

On asking what do you know about the Uk only one response was in old times the woman would wear long dresses, yesterday all that could be said was we had a Queen.

Many of these children live in the orphanage and go to the attached school and i guess there is no television and so how such chidren have any c lue to know what life is like or how it differs from another place.

Of all places ir is really quite hard to work out where the position of Trienestria in the order of things - other than that Gods kingdom is no further from these people than anyone else!

Below you can see me with the kids a very formal setting but the kids set to work with all dexterity.

The director had said the children could not be happier than to have some one wanting to take their work and show it to others. It is quite a humbling experience to offer something so simple yet it be appreciated so much! I am left feeling more daunted as I wonder how that I can actually make this happen - and one senses one should having set out like this!

Once again here are just a couple of the young people with their work!

One girl went so far as to write a poem Titled "To England" on the reverse of her work - i must get this translated tomorrow!

One of the oldest boys aged 17 went a stage further he left and returned with two further drawings which he pressented to me as a gift !

It was quite hard to comprehend quite how much this was meaning to them!

The driver and interpreter. This old Russiab car does not have seatbelts and this Russian driver likes to get frighteningly close to vehicles infront and these roads do not have the best surfaces for breaking!

The director of the school then came with us in the car so she introduce us to the Palace of Culture. Apparently these can be found in most villages and are asubstitute to having art classes in the seperate schools and caters for many different media from wood to sewing and guitar lessons.

work certainly was of a very high standard.

The man in the left of the picture is a former Soviet Artist who has now choosen to teach others!

A old palace now used as a disco stands opposite the Lenin Statue.

All Quite a contrast to the previous day

Tirapsol

finally some pics!!
Here we are with Claudia and her foster daughter Rita - she loved painting pictures of her own life knowing they were going to UK - we are simply offering love by allowing them to paint. I had the honour of painting with her in her room. I may be taking her on a boat trip later this week!

This is one of the less fortunate, Tania aged 8 who having completed her drawing insisted on putting all the art work stuff away and carrying it down to our car. These children are so loving but have had a bad time from parents it is an honour to be here to offer them love in a simple and practical way - i am less concerned about the content of the drawing but to allowing them to be valued.

Here is another young man and he is smiling without being prompted. For his age he worked ibcredibly hard on making the leaves on the trees look real so i think he will be one of the ones we work with on Wednesday!

another entry

Monday now at the Save the Children MD

being well hosted here!

Hectic schedule

Attended church yesterday and spoke about testimony to get here and the goals of the partnership.

I was guest with my host and his friends as we barbequed fish on the banks of the Nistra and drank wine.

Today began to be shown the work being done here by Save the Chidren and did my first art workshop at an orphanage. The chidren were from 8-11 and so the work done was pretty standard for that age but i noted some really consientious work and we have to remember these chidrens backgrounds and just the knowledge that I had come all the way from UK to take an interest in them.

Working to today i was given strick guidelines on the approach to ensure we did not offeend either the hosts who run the orphanage or the children.

So it was very much a trial run and tomorrow I will go to a second orthanage

Tonight I went with ny host for tea with Claudia who has fostered two years ago Rita who entered the orhonage at an early age because her parents were alcoholics and is nine in February.

She loved making several paintings and we had a treemendous supper with cooked rabbit and massive cups of tea, which i have to say i approved of!!

What a day .... my hosts have provided me with a laptop but at moment struggling to load pictures ---- having very full days here too!!

one final Impression

I think my impression are becoming more Ryanistic all the time, appropriate as I go to the place where Lanniov was born and did much of his painting!
This is a view from the minibus enroute to Chisinau, the countryside is a live animals of every description, there are no fences or enclosures. Can you spot the watermellon seller close to the bill board?
But what I am particuarly trying to high light here is the use of horse drawn vehicles operaing a long side lorries and traffic of every description - on roads that are less than well metalled!

This country is gripped by high petroleum prices too - I just wonder how the running costs of a horse drawn cart compare - quite environmnentally friendly too!

Afternoon classes Beckon

!st September back to school across former Soviet Union!

It was expereincing this in 1993 that has prompted my return at this time of year, and I was not too be dissappointed!
Swetlana had arranged for me to go to Pushkin school the only Russian speaking school left in Causine. There were 4 out of 5 now of course the tide has changed and swung to Romanian speaking schools.
Swetlana ios Russian and attended and worked as an assistant at this school and there was a sense of pride as she said "it is only the Russian School that really keeps this tradition up so Clive I have arranged for you to go here - you must use your camara!"

I certainly was in for a treat!
I have only been here a week but getting to know the pupils at Svetlanas school of English has been most interesting because it is a mixture of both language speakers!

And as I walked into the school I was greeted by many of the young Russian pupils who were eager to have their photos taken - all carrying a bouquet or a arrangement of flowers to give to their teacher.

One of the English School pupils poses for her picture - one feels so privledged after just being in this most friendly rural community for less than a week.
I keep questioning why I am only here for such a short time (last time I was in Chisenau in 1993 for close on 5 months) and have to keep focusing on my present objective of completing the Art project!

I could include so many wonderful photos of this event, but here is a section where some of the older pupils are dressed up in Moldovan dress and are playing out a story of folklore about Gugata a man whose hat gets bigger and bigger as he does good and covers the town.

The new intake of pupils all then run to touch the hat to grant them success in their first year of studies!

Finally the small bit acted out at School 61 sees the oldest pupil carrying the youngest student on his shoulder round the courtyard to officailly open the new academic year of school!

Similar images are shown on the TV news = I think both Moldovan and Russian

Inside the Classroom.

Seemed more like a museum but my guess is that the Russian speaking population have been granted the oldest school I will try and find out!

One wonders what the Orphanages are going to be like!

School had finished by 11.00 so teachers could have meetings and prepare timetables

Here is my attempt as catching some of the key moments but I think it needs a second approach!

Artwork and moving on!

I worked with the English School and had several paintng brought in

There are afternoon classes today and classes on Saturday morning so I intend to go to these before I am being picked up by the Director of Save the Children MD who will have a letter signed by save local police to allow me to stay and work with them.

Some things about this little state:

The civil war had just come to an end in 1993 when I was here I did go to Tiraspol with othera on day trip and also very fresh graves and war memorial to the casualties of that conflict.

Swetlana we take volunteers there regularly on day trips

The Lonely Planet Guide Book advises against going

The Peace Corps (Usa) Volunteers are not allowed to go there.

a quote fron Bob a Canadian whoo also comes to offer support to this partneership recently wrote in an email to me "Help the Children have a very good relationship wih all the orphanages in fact the govt, have approved them working with orphanages, They are trusted, that is in itself a wonderful thing in a country that is suspiscious of Christians and their intentions."

I am here thanks to stepping out and offering encorage others of limited opportunity through creative projects that they would find their creative abilities sharing Christ's joy and hope to these communiies while building bridges between communities and nations.

So even all this preparation in Causeni and Identifying with the wonderful people of this small nation is part of the process, so those of you of a praying nature and God loving I would ask you join me as I pray that God will prosper this time, and that we will be able to get the topics right, that young people of limited means will have new creative expereinces with paints, (and my thanks goes to many of you who have contributed here), and projects new to them and that it will spark new hopes and aspirations for the future despite their present circumstances.

That I will be able to build good relations with the staff and this will just be the beginning of this work Amen

Next time it is lilely I will be writing from Tirapsol.

Drop an email if you are enjoying this blog - it would be good to hear from you!

National Language Day

It was great going into Chisinau every where was in a holiday spirit, after three days of bank holiday!
To keep in the mould with my rural Moldovan neighbours I went to market and purchased a new friend, Mr Rabbit so I can have an animal to graze outside the apartment!

31st of August is National language day.

I was very pleased to be in Chisinau as I remembered that in 1993 I had been looking forward to going to a big concert with a National singer on that occasion. I went with friends I had made at the time only to find the singer had refused to sing as their were hunger strikers outside the parliament building protesting about prisoners still be held as a result of the conflict with Triesniestria. I could understand the singers view point but at the same time I as a visitor i would have liked to have experienced the concert!

This year was different, I have learnt that there are differences of opinion over even the Moldovan language. That of the Russian influenced language which is refered to as Moldovan and the pure form which is refered to as Romanian. People apparently can get more than a little agitated over the wrong name being used!

Today there were national singers, using the Romanian language to celebrate the festival.

There was also the unveiling and dedication of a new statue to a contemporay Poet!

Later on in the day I went up to Botannica again to the area of the city where I lived in 1993!

I found this rather attractive statue in one of the parks where I often went swimming with Marriane and her freinds on a sunday.

This is just a quick attempt to sketch the urban landscape over a coffee in the vicinity of Botannica close to where I used to live.

Canyou spot the MacDonalds drive through sign - there are many additional shops and kiosks to when I was here in 1993 - a long with a much greater volume of traffic!

I also found the school complexes where I taught in 1993. This in fact is the nursery I think - I liked the bird figures - notice the Cockrell?

I have found out that the schools have changed from numbers to names so my endeavors to write to the school directly to try and trace my former work colleague were quite possibly in vein!

Tomorrow is !st September I waas tempted to stay in Chisinau in the hope of finding the former teacher but have decided to go with the present and focus on future opportunities.

Current frustrations with art project

I was able to speak with a Moldovan who has attempted similar projects and has had similar experiences as what I am having --- but I will keep plugging away at it!

Spelling

I apologise for any spelling errors only I am operating on a Russian machine and when I try to use the spell checker every word comes up in error.

Life is tolerable in the house, but any affection and the sharing of drinks has stopped - shame when my intention was to value their company!

Last weekend they said I would be able to join them to go to the various events on in the town, but on each ocasion excuses were made. I had been looking forward to having their company!

Ups and downs in the Moldovan heat

Today
i was to have gone to a wine tasting place arranged by my hosts - it was going to cost a lot - but I thought for the sake of harmony go with it. A price had been agreed in Euros the night before for myself Olga and her father to go, Nice touch they are making me welcome

10.00 oh no that amount is not enough, we need more for father to be able to come !
I was already paying for what would be an expensive day out in London for three people and as far as I could see we were only going a matter of miles up the road!

No I am not paying anymore it is too too much!!

What followed was a cold war - i was refused even lunch

Thankfully I went with the English School who are also out to make a buck at every opportunitty and I was in the company of three English girls who have arrived since. One senses our hard currency is valued much more than what we have to offer.

I hope I can learn lessons and the fact that I have been invited by Save the Children to do Art work should help.

Thankfully I am off to Chisinau tomorrow to meet a friend!

tasting these Moldovan grapes - big deal you can buy them on every street corner and all the locals say the home made wines are the ones to drink!

In the cool of the evening I needed some art therapy to go over the roller coasters of the day!

Title: A Well, three Cookerel and three cats at Dusk

Food alone tonight no vokda no beer and eventaul access to Computer ... one week in and how the heat can change things!

A Toast to healthy living!

7.45 Boris has just come in with a sunflower head, you eat the seeds in cooking and with beer (piva)

Now guys you can see how my previous experience in Moldova influenced my thinking to come to Blaenau Gwent in 2003 to encourage healthy eating !

Long live the rural economy in Moldova and other Russian speaking countries - cheers Boris!

Since up to now I have tended to highlight the rural nature of life here and all the animals being herded in one form or another.

Today I thought I would look more at people and business more!

This is Adrian he is learning English as he is a customer advisor for Orange and worka in one of the three stores in the town/

I walked out to several sides of the town here is a route way out of town vehicles of all shapes and sizes and people walking in the morning.

Here two women one carrying gardening tools pass a roadside crucifix, a common fixture here and mainly plastic suggesting they have been put here since 1991.

I am getting ready to go to Tiraspol at the weekend and went into this store to buy paper and other equipment in readiness, as I have a full week ahead!

To my surprise I met Lauren from Chicago who is here with the Peace Core - wow it was simply great to find another English speaker!

Dogs aswell as Geese!

An impression

Goose patrol at 94!

Thats your lot to day Piva, sunflower seeds and Russian tv now!
